Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been deployed to Regina after an incident saw police officers shoot and wound a man. The Regina Police Service (RPS) confirmed the deployment in a news release Tuesday morning. According to the service, the non-fatal shooting took place at around 2:10 a.m. when officers responded to a home on the 800 block of Elphinstone Street. Police learned that a man had fired a crossbow and was threatening several people inside the home. Officers arrived at the home and found three people inside. Two of them, a woman and a boy, were safely taken outside. During the incident, police say an altercation took place between the man and police officers which ended with two officers firing their weapons and injuring the man. Officers provided first aid to the man before paramedics transported him to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. “We understand this incident is of public interest and ask for patience as the facts are gathered. Because this is an active SIRT investigation, no further information will be provided by the Regina Police Service,” RPS said in the news release, adding that future updates will be provided by SIRT. SIRT is an independent, civilian-led unit responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police, including in-custody deaths or serious injuries. Tuesday’s incident in Regina represents the fourth time the organization has been deployed in 2026. SIRT also responded to an RCMP in-custody death in the Kipling area on Tuesday.
