A Regina man was taken into custody last weekend after allegedly threatening another driver — before travelling 130 km/h down city streets. The Regina Police Service (RPS) says it received the call at around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. The suspect was allegedly following a female victim closely and repeatedly flashing his high beams. According to police, when the two vehicles were stopped at a red light, the suspect came up to the victim’s vehicle and banged on her windows before continuing to follow her in his vehicle. Plainclothes officers in an unmarked vehicle found the suspect driving in the area of College Avenue and Hamilton Street. The suspect, not aware that the vehicle was being driven by police, flashed his high beams, sped up and cut off the vehicle before slamming on the brakes. He then fled the area at a “high rate of speed,” according to RPS. The service’s police plane was alerted and continued to follow the suspect vehicle from the air – witnessing the man exceed 130 km/h at one point. A short time later, a marked police vehicle was able to pull the suspect over. He was taken into custody and charged with dangerous driving. RPS says its Aerial Support Unit (ASU) has assisted in 331 calls for service over the past month – leading to 66 people being charged.
