Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement warning of possible funnel clouds in central and southern Saskatchewan on Monday. Both Regina and Saskatoon are included in the advisory on ECCC’s website. According to ECCC, funnel clouds that may develop on Monday are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. ECCC said the weak rotation is not usually a danger near the ground but there is a chance a weak landspout tornado could develop. “If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued,” the weather service said. Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous and strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances, ECCC said.
