Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is warning that there is a possibility of funnel clouds developing in southwest Saskatchewan today. A special weather statement, issued at 2:38 p.m., outlines a low-pressure system over southern Alberta will lead to scattered thunderstorm development over the province’s southwest. The statement covers the southwest corner of the province, including the communities of Maple Creek, Eastend and Shaunavon – falling as far north as Leader. “Some of these thunderstorms may produce funnel clouds or brief land spout tornadoes, especially early on in their development,” the statement read. The threat for funnel clouds is expected to dissipate early Tuesday evening. According to ECCC, these funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado,” the statement read. Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous.
